Chapter 12

Pronunciation Guide

Many words are spelt one way and spoken another, and a wrong pronunciation can also lead to a wrong spelling. This chapter brings together the words students most often mispronounce. Tap 🔊, listen, and repeat each word aloud until it sounds natural to you.

English Alphabet and Sounds

The English alphabet has 26 letters. Of these, 5 letters (a, e, i, o, u) are vowels and the rest are consonants.

To pronounce words correctly, you should know the sounds that these letters produce. English has about 44 sounds (20 vowel sounds and 24 consonant sounds). Because there are more sounds than letters, some letters have more than one sound, and some letters give different sounds in different combinations.

In this guide, the pronunciation of each word is shown in Devanagari in brackets, e.g. Name (नेम). These respellings are a close guide; listen to correct English and practise aloud. First, let us learn the sounds of the vowels and their combinations.

Sounds of A

Concept 1: When 'a' comes alone as a word, it usually gives the sound 'अ', not 'ए'.
e.g. A boy (अ बॉय)

Concept 2: 'a', 'ai' and 'ay' can give the sound 'ए'.
e.g. Name (नेम), Blame (ब्लेम), Rain (रेन), Say (से), Pay (पे)
