Phrasal Verbs

A phrasal verb is a verb joined with a preposition or an adverb, and together they take a new meaning, as in give up or call off. SSC asks their meaning, or asks you to fill the correct particle in a sentence. Learn each verb with all its particles side by side; that is where the confusion is.

What Is a Phrasal Verb?

A phrasal verb is usually made of two or more words: first a verb, and then a particle (a small word such as up, down, out, off, away). Together they often give a new meaning that is different from the verb alone.

Learning every phrasal verb by heart is difficult. But if you understand the meaning of the verb and the usual sense of its particle, you can often work out the meaning of the phrasal verb.
