Chapter 15
Exotic & Expected Words
SSC has begun to ask very difficult words: rare Latin and Greek words, scientific terms tested as spellings, and common-looking words used in a rare sense. This Part collects the words most likely to come next: 400 exotic words A to Z, 100 technical and scientific words with spelling hacks, 150 rare homonyms grouped by topic, and 100 common homonyms with every sense. Read the opening pages first to see where such words come from and how SSC builds a question out of them, then practise each word from Level 1 to Level 3.
Where Do These Words Come From?
Before writing this book, I sat down and read almost every SSC paper of 2025 and 2026: CGL, Steno, CHSL, CPO, MTS, Selection Post and Delhi Police. I went through all their vocabulary questions, passages and cloze tests.
As I read, one thing kept appearing again and again: SSC does not pick its difficult words from just anywhere. They come from a handful of families, and once you recognise the family, half the work is already done.
Old Words with Latin and Greek Roots
Words such as garrulous, pusillanimous, perfidious, sybaritic and lachrymose. SSC asks these more than any others in synonym and antonym questions, and interestingly, it builds the options from the same family as well.
So cramming them will not help; understand the root instead. Pusill means 'very small' and anim means 'mind', so pusillanimous means 'small-minded', that is, cowardly. Once you understand a word this way, you will not forget it.
Families Built from One Root
- phobia words: glossophobia, trypophobia
- logy and logist words: ophiology, psephology, lepidopterist
- cracy words: kleptocracy, plutocracy
- cide words: regicide, filicide
- words beginning with mis: misogamist, misanthrope
Most one word substitution questions are built from these families. Learn the root, and the whole family comes along with it.
Technical Words and Heavy Passage Language
Technical words whose spelling is asked: ventriculoperitoneal, phytoremediation, nitrocellulose. In CGL 2025, the meaning of these words was not asked; their spelling was asked directly. Do not try to memorise such a word in one go; break it into pieces: ventriculo, then peritoneal. Each piece has its own meaning, and when you know the meaning, the spelling comes out right on its own.
Heavy language in passages and error spotting: hermeneutics, subaltern, reify, verisimilitude. Many CGL 2025 passages and the long sentences in error spotting read as if they had been lifted from a research paper. The meanings of these words are seldom asked directly, but you need to know them to understand the sentence; otherwise the whole sentence slips out of your hands.
Rare Homonym Words, and Words That Return
Rare homonym words: introit, pauldron, fief, gules, colophon. These words belong to the world of the church, the castle, armour, heraldry and old books. Their whole game is explained in the Homonyms pages ahead, where I also show how to work out the answer even when you do not know the word's meaning.
Keep one thing in mind: SSC repeats its words. Many CGL 2025 words were asked again in Steno 2026, and many words have already appeared in two or three different exams of the past year. That is why this book contains exactly those words, along with some words of the same level that may come up in future. I have deliberately left out easy words, so that your time goes only into the words that genuinely trip you up in the exam hall.
Homonyms: How Is This Question Built?
"Select the sentence containing the homonym of the highlighted word." In CGL 2025, this question appeared in almost every shift. When I placed all these questions side by side, the pattern turned out to be the same every time.
The given sentence places the word in its own world, such as the church, the castle, armour, heraldry, old books or linguistics. Three of the option sentences belong to that same world. The fourth takes the same word somewhere completely different, into the sentence of a chef, a biology student, an engineer, a nutritionist or a florist. That fourth sentence is the answer, even when the word's use in it looks artificial, as in "The biology student dissected the pauldron of the sea slug".
With common words such as current, compact, stern, ring, watch and can, the fourth sentence uses the word's other real meaning. For example, in "The sailor stood at the stern of the ship", stern means the rear part of a ship.
My Method: Name the World
First, read the given sentence and say in one word which world it belongs to: the church, the castle, armour or books. Then do the same with all four options. Three of them will match one another; the one that does not match is the answer. You do not even need to know the word's meaning for this.
In CGL 2025, this method worked almost every time. There was just one question ("current", 16 Sep, Shift 3) where SSC's own answer key seems to be faulty.
Cue Words That Reveal a Sentence's World
If you see these cue words in a sentence, the sentence belongs to that world. The last part of each line shows what the answer sentence usually looks like.
- Church and worship → cue words: priest, bishop, monk, cleric, choir, altar, abbey, chapel, cathedral, liturgy, Mass, Eucharist, sanctuary, canon law. The answer sentence often has a chef, florist, alchemist, geologist, nutritionist, investor or tailor using the word.

- Heraldry → cue words: coat of arms, family crest, shield, prince, nobility, emblem. The answer sentence often has a chef, painter or fashion designer using the word.
- Books and manuscripts → cue words: monk, scribe, manuscript, parchment, library, annotations, printing. The answer sentence often has an AI engineer, technician or entomologist using the word.
- Language and philosophy → cue words: philosopher, treatise, text, sentence, syntax, proposition, logic. The answer sentence often has an engineer, swimmer or geologist using the word.
