Fixed Prepositions

Some words take only one particular preposition after them. We say abide by the rules, accused of theft, fond of music. Change the preposition and the sentence becomes wrong. SSC tests these again and again in error spotting, fill in the blanks and sentence improvement. Learn each word together with its preposition, as one unit.

What is a fixed preposition?

A fixed preposition is the preposition that a particular verb, adjective or noun always takes. There is no grammar formula behind it; it is simply how English is used.

Verb + preposition: insist on, refrain from, comply with
Adjective + preposition: afraid of, addicted to, good at
Noun + preposition: access to, respect for, cure for

So the right way to learn them is in pairs: never learn 'abide' alone, learn abide by.

One word, different prepositions

Some words change their preposition with the meaning or with the object. These are SSC's favourite traps.

angry with a person, angry at a thing or situation
agree with a person, agree to a proposal, agree on a point
die of a disease, die from an injury or cause
responsible to a person, responsible for a thing

How SSC asks them

Error spotting: 'He is senior than me' — the error is the preposition; it should be senior to.
Fill in the blanks: 'She was accused ___ cheating' — the answer is of.
Sentence improvement: 'They insisted for an apology' — improve to insisted on.

Whenever a sentence has a verb or adjective followed by a preposition, stop and check the pair. Most preposition errors in SSC are of this kind.

How to learn this chapter

Read one group of about 20 pairs. Say each pair aloud with its example sentence, because the sound of the right pair stays in memory. Then take the group test: a sentence with a blank, and four prepositions to choose from. Repeat the groups where you make mistakes. A pair is truly learnt only when the wrong preposition starts sounding odd to you.
