कागज़ को पहले आधा ऊपर की ओर मोड़ा गया और फिर एक बार और ऊपर की ओर मोड़ा गया, जिससे चार परतों वाली, एक-चौथाई ऊँचाई की पट्टी बन गई।
Cuts (बाईं ओर plus, बीच में rectangle और दाईं ओर plus) इसी पट्टी में हैं, इसलिए हर परत में वही तीन cuts हैं।

The paper is folded in half upwards and then folded upwards once more, giving a strip one quarter of the height with four layers.
The cuts (a plus on the left, a rectangle in the middle, a plus on the right) are in that strip, so each layer carries the same three cuts.
Unfolding the folds repeats the row of three cuts at four heights, one per layer, with no sideways change because there was no vertical fold.
So the opened paper has four rows, each with a plus, a rectangle and a plus.
