The angle of elevation of a cloud from a point h m above a lake is α and the angle of depression of its reflection in the lake is β. Find the height H of the cloud above the lake.

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (A) H = h(tan α + tan β)/tan β − tan α

ON ⊥ CM खींचो और ON = LM = d मानो। तब NM = h।
(H − h) tan β = (H + h) tan α
⇒ H(tan β − tan α) = h(tan α + tan β)
⇒ H = h(tan α + tan β)tan β − tan α
✓
Let O be the observer, h above the lake at L, and let the cloud C be at height H above the point M of the lake. Its reflection C′ is as far below the water as the cloud is above it, so MC′ = H.
Draw ON ⊥ CM and let ON = LM = d. Then NM = h.
Cloud: CN = H − h, so tan α = H − hd ⇒ d = H − htan α
Reflection: NC′ = H + h, so tan β = H + hd ⇒ d = H + htan β
Equate the two values of d: (H − h) tan β = (H + h) tan α
⇒ H(tan β − tan α) = h(tan α + tan β)
⇒ H = h(tan α + tan β)tan β − tan α
✓
The height of the cloud is H = h(tan α + tan β)tan β − tan α.
SMART APPROACH

Check with numbers: α = 30°, β = 45°, h = 1 makes the cloud H = 2 + √3 ≈ 3.73 (then d = 3 + √3, and both tan values fit), and only option (A) gives 3.73. Also, the reflection is seen more steeply than the cloud, so β > α and the denominator must be tan β − tan α; option (B) even comes out negative.
