Why we are not crushed under the large atmospheric pressure?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (D) Because the pressure inside our body balances the outside pressure

Why
The body's fluids and gases push outwards with the same pressure as the air pushes inwards. The two cancel, so we feel no crushing force.
Why not the others
•
(A) Because we are very strong: strength has nothing to do with it.
•
(B) Because gravity pulls it away: gravity actually holds the air to the Earth.
•
(C) Because atmospheric pressure is very low: it is large, about 10⁵ Pa.
Around this question
•
Atmospheric force on a human body is of the order of several tonnes.
•
Deep-sea fish burst if brought to the surface quickly, as their internal pressure is no longer balanced.
•
Astronauts wear pressurised suits for the same reason.
•
Ears 'pop' on a flight or hill road when inside and outside pressures become unequal.
