The same force is applied on two blocks, one with a small contact area and the other with a larger contact area, both resting on soft sand. Which block will sink more into the sand and why?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (B) The block with smaller area, because its pressure is greater

Why
Both blocks press on the sand with the same force, but pressure = F / A. The block with the smaller contact area produces the larger pressure, so it sinks more.
Why not the others
•
(A) Larger area, because its pressure is greater: larger area gives less pressure.
•
(C) Both sink equally: equal force, but unequal pressure.
•
(D) Neither sinks because sand is rigid: soft sand yields under pressure.
Around this question
•
Camel's wide feet reduce pressure on sand.
•
Lying flat on thin ice spreads your weight over a big area.
•
Army tanks run on broad chain tracks for the same reason.
•
Pressure, not force alone, decides how deeply something sinks.
