A farmer wants to mix two fertilisers. One contains 40% nitrogen and the other contains 25% nitrogen. In what ratio should he mix them to obtain a fertiliser containing 30% nitrogen?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (B) 1 : 2

(Alligation):
25% : 40% = (40 − 30) : (30 − 25) = 10 : 5 = 2 : 1
40% : 25% = 1 : 2
✓
अनुपात (Ratio) 1 : 2 है।
By alligation on nitrogen percentage:
25% : 40% = (40 − 30) : (30 − 25) = 10 : 5 = 2 : 1
The question names the 40% fertiliser first, so
40% : 25% = 1 : 2
✓
The ratio is 1 : 2.
SMART APPROACH

30% is nearer to 25%, so the 25% fertiliser is used more. In the order of the question (40% first), the first part must be smaller: 1 : 2.
