Two chords AB and CD of a circle subtend angles of 40° and 70° respectively at the centre. Find the difference between the angles subtended by these chords at points on their minor arcs.

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (B) 15°

✓
Join the centre O to a point X on the major arc. △OAX and △OBX are isosceles (OA = OX = OB), so by the exterior angle property the angle at X is half the central angle: ∠AXB = 40°2 = 20°. In the same way chord CD gives 70°2 = 35° on its major arc.
A point Y on the minor arc forms a cyclic quadrilateral AXBY, so ∠AYB = 180° − 20° = 160°, and for CD: 180° − 35° = 145°.
Difference = 160° − 145° = 15°
(On the major arcs too: 35° − 20° = 15°.)
✓
The difference is 15°.
SMART APPROACH

Whether the points are on the minor or the major arcs, the difference is half the difference of the central angles: 70° − 40°2 = 15°.
