किसी बल (force) द्वारा किया गया कार्य (work) तब ऋणात्मक होता है जब बल और विस्थापन (displacement) विपरीत दिशाओं में हों। कार्य का सूत्र (formula) W = F d cos θ है; विपरीत दिशा में θ = 180° होता है और cos 180° = –1 होने से कार्य ऋणात्मक आता है।
