What happens to the speed of sound when it travels from air into water?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (C) It increases

When sound travels from air into water, its speed increases. The speed of sound in water is about 1500 m/s, whereas in air it is about 340 m/s. Even though water has a higher density, the speed increases because of its greater elasticity.
The general order of the speed of sound is: solids > liquids > gases.
When sound passes from one medium to another, its frequency does not change; only its wavelength and speed change.
Sound needs a medium for its propagation; it cannot travel through vacuum.
