A wire of length L and diameter d extends under a tensile force F. If both its length and diameter are doubled while the same force is applied, what will be its new extension relative to the original extension? Assume that the material remains unchanged and the wire is within its elastic limit.

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (B) Half

यंग गुणांक (Young's modulus) Y = (F/A)/(ΔL/L) से विस्तार ΔL = FL/(AY) प्राप्त होता है।
From Young's modulus Y = (F/A)/(ΔL/L), the extension is ΔL = FL/(AY). Doubling the length doubles L, while doubling the diameter makes the area A four times (A ∝ d²). So the new extension = (2L)/(4A) = ½ of the original. Hence the extension becomes half.
•
Young's modulus is a property of the material and does not change with the dimensions of the wire.
•
Hooke's law holds only within the elastic limit.
•
The SI unit of Young's modulus is the pascal (N/ m²).
