राज्य के नीति निदेशक तत्त्वों में अनुच्छेद 4 (Article 4)7 राज्य को अपने लोगों के पोषाहार-स्तर और जीवन-स्तर (standard of living) को ऊँ चा करने तथा लोक स्वास्थ्य (public health) में सुधार करने का दायित्व सौंपता है। इसी अनुच्छेद (Article) में नशीले पेयों और स्वास्थ्य के लिए हानिकर औषधियों के प्रतिषेध (मद्य-निषेध) का भी निर्देश है।

Among the Directive Principles of State Policy, Article 47 places on the State the duty to raise the level of nutrition and the standard of living of its people and to improve public health. The same Article also directs the prohibition of intoxicating drinks and of drugs injurious to health.
Article 38 relates to promoting the welfare of the people by a social order, Article 42 to just and humane conditions of work and maternity relief, and Article 43 to a living wage.
The Directive Principles are in Part IV of the Constitution (Articles 36–51).
These principles are not enforceable by courts.
