If the price of the commodity decreases from Rs. 100 to Rs. 105, and the quantity demanded decreases from 100 to 115, then what is the value of the price elasticity?
ExplanationAnswer and explanation
Answer: (B) 3
Price elasticity of demand = percentage change in quantity demanded / percentage change in price. Taking the figures as given, the change in price is 5 on a base of 100, i.e. 5 per cent, and the change in quantity is 15 on a base of 100, i.e. 15 per cent, so elasticity == 3.
•
Demand is elastic when the value of elasticity is greater than 1, unitary elastic when equal to 1 and inelastic when less than 1.
•
Perfectly inelastic demand has elasticity of zero; perfectly elastic demand has infinite elasticity.
•
Necessities generally have inelastic demand, while luxuries have elastic demand.
