The Indian monsoon is primarily responsible for seasonal rainfall in India. What is the main cause behind the reversal of wind direction during monsoon?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (B) Differential heating of land and sea

The main cause of the seasonal reversal of monsoon winds is the differential heating and cooling of the large Asian landmass and the surrounding Indian Ocean. In summer the land heats intensely and a low-pressure area forms over north-western India, while the ocean remains cooler with higher pressure, so moist winds blow from the ocean to the land and, deflected by the Coriolis force, become the south-west monsoon. In winter the pattern reverses. The Coriolis effect only deflects the winds and does not cause the reversal.
