भारत में शुष्क उत्तर-पूर्वी व्यापारिक पवनें (north-east trade winds) शीत ऋतु (Cold weather season) में प्रभावी रहती हैं। इस समय स्थल से समुद्र की ओर चलने वाली ये पवनें प्रायः शुष्क होती हैं, इसलिए देश के अधिकांश भाग में मौसम शुष्क रहता है।
शीत ऋतु में पश्चिमी विक्षोभ (western disturbances) के कारण उत्तर-पश्चिम भारत में हल्की वर्षा होती है।
पीछे हटते मानसून (monsoon) के समय तमिलनाडु के तट पर उत्तर-पूर्वी पवनों से वर्षा होती है।
