ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (C) Gandhara and Mathura schools

Why
Before the Kushana age the Buddha was shown only through symbols. Around the 1st century CE the first human images of the Buddha were carved in two places: Gandhara in the north-west (with Greek influence) and Mathura in the Ganga-Yamuna region (with an Indian style). Both flourished under the Kushanas.
Why not the others
•
(A) Mauryan stone pillars carry animal capitals and edicts, not human images of the Buddha.
•
(B) The Amaravati school (Satavahana, in the south) at first also used symbols; its human Buddha figures come later and after Gandhara and Mathura.
•
(D) Sanchi's stupa gateways show the Buddha only as symbols (tree, wheel, footprints, stupa).
Around this question
•
Gandhara school: Greco-Buddhist, blue-grey schist, wavy hair, heavy drapery.
•
Mathura school: indigenous style, spotted red sandstone, Buddha with a smiling face and shaven head.
•
Both patronised by the Kushanas, especially Kanishka.
•
The Amaravati school used white marble and was known for lively narrative scenes.
•
Human images became popular as Mahayana accepted image worship.
