Put यानी रखना और on यानी surface पर। शरीर एक surface है, उस पर कपड़ा रखा = put on (पहनना)। Put on पहनना होता है और put off postpone।
Put means to place and 'on' means on a surface. Your body is a surface; when you place clothes on it, you put them on — you wear them. Put on is to wear; put off is to postpone.
Object देखकर तय कीजिए: कपड़ा हो तो put on, आग हो तो put out, तारीख़ हो तो put off, रखने की जगह हो तो put away। कपड़े में opposite take off है।
Choose by the object: clothes take put on, a fire takes put out, a date takes put off, and storage takes put away. Its opposite in the clothes sense is take off.
