What causes the deposition of debris carried by North Indian rivers in the plains and deltas?
ExplanationAnswer and explanation
Answer: (C) Reduction in hydraulic gradient leading to loss of kinetic energy
The deposition of the debris carried by the North Indian rivers in the plains and deltas is caused by a reduction in the gradient (slope). When the slope decreases, the velocity and kinetic energy of the river fall, so the river is unable to carry the sediment it has brought along and deposits it.
This deposition formed the fertile alluvial plains of the Ganga-Brahmaputra and the Sundarbans delta.
In the mountain region, the steep slope makes erosion the main work of the river.
