ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (C) It lies in the rain shadow region of the Aravalli Hills

The Indian (Thar) Desert lies to the west of the Aravalli Hills, on their dry leeward (rain-shadow) side. The Aravallis run parallel to the Arabian Sea branch of the south-west monsoon, so they do not force these winds to rise and shed rain; the Bay of Bengal branch loses most of its moisture before reaching this region. Hence the area receives very little rainfall (less than 150 mm a year in the far west) and has shifting sand dunes. It is not in a rainforest region, not on the Western Ghats' windward side, and not fed by the north-east monsoon.
