When a fully turgid plant cell is placed in a solution with the same solute concentration as its cell sap, which change is most likely to occur first?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (B) Decreased turgor pressure

A fully turgid cell has a positive pressure potential, so its water potential is higher than that of an external solution with the same solute concentration. Water therefore moves out slightly and the turgor pressure decreases first.
•
Water potential of a cell = solute potential + pressure potential.
•
In a fully turgid cell, the wall pressure balances the osmotic pressure, and no more water enters.
•
In a hypertonic solution, water leaves the cell and plasmolysis occurs.
