What controls the opening and closing of stomata?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (B) Guard cell

Why
Each stoma has a pair of bean-shaped guard cells. When they fill with water and become turgid, they bend apart and the pore opens. When they lose water, they straighten and the pore closes. So guard cells control the opening and closing of stomata.
Why not the others
•
(A) Root cells absorb water and minerals; they have nothing to do with stomata.
•
(C) Stem cells divide to form new tissue.
•
(D) The midrib is the central vein of the leaf.
Around this question
•
Stomata exchange gases (CO2, O2) and let out water vapour.
•
Guard cells are the only epidermal cells with chloroplasts.
•
Stomata open in light and close at night in most plants; CAM plants do the opposite.
•
Abscisic acid is the stress hormone that closes stomata in drought.
•
Stomata are more numerous on the lower surface of dicot leaves; in floating leaves (lotus) they are on the upper surface.
