What is molecular mass?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (C) The sum of the atomic masses of all atoms in a molecule

•
O2 = 32 u, NH3 = 17 u, HNO3 = 63 u, H2SO4 = 98 u, ग्लूकोज़ C6H12O6 = 180 u।
•
Why
Molecular mass is the mass of one molecule expressed in atomic mass units (u). We find it by adding the atomic masses of every atom in the formula. For H2O it is 2(1) + 16 = 18 u, and for CO2 it is 12 + 2(16) = 44 u.
Why not the others
•
(A) The number of atoms in a molecule is its atomicity, not its mass.
•
(B) The sum of valencies has nothing to do with mass; valency is combining capacity.
•
(D) Volume occupied is a different property (a mole of gas at STP occupies 22.4 litres).
Around this question
•
Atomic mass unit (u) = 1/12 of the mass of one carbon-12 atom.
•
O2 = 32 u, NH3 = 17 u, HNO3 = 63 u, H2SO4 = 98 u, glucose C6H12O6 = 180 u.
•
For ionic compounds the term is formula unit mass: NaCl = 58.5 u, CaCl2 = 111 u.
•
Atomicity: He, Ne, Ar are monoatomic; H2, O2, N2, Cl2 diatomic; O3 triatomic; P4 tetratomic; S8 octaatomic.
•
Mass of 1 mole of a substance in grams equals its molecular mass (water: 18 g).
