Lothal (Gujarat) was a major port city of the Harappan civilization. A massive dockyard was discovered here, which is a rectangular brick-built reservoir measuring 214x36 meters. It was used for berthing ships and facilitating trade. Lothal is also famous for its bead-making industry and maritime trade with regions like the Persian Gulf. Excavations revealed an artificial dock and several model boats. The dockyard is considered one of the earliest examples of hydraulic engineering.
