When ice at 0°C is heated at atmospheric pressure until it completely melts, which of the following statements is correct?
ExplanationAnswer and explanation
Answer: (A) Overcome the forces of attraction between particles
At 0°C, ice remains at 0°C throughout the whole process of melting at atmospheric pressure. The heat supplied during this time (latent heat of fusion) is used to overcome the forces of attraction between the particles, so the average kinetic energy of the particles does not increase.
The temperature remains constant during the latent heat period, because the heat is used in changing the state.
The same rule applies to the boiling of water, where the latent heat of vaporisation is used.
During a change of state the arrangement of the particles changes, but not their temperature.
