Taste यानी स्वाद और 'less' यानी बिना। बिना स्वाद का खाना tasteless, और बिना समझ का मज़ाक भी tasteless। Tasteful और tasteless आमने-सामने हैं — 'ful' बनाम 'less' का वही खेल।
Taste plus 'less' means without taste: food with no flavour is tasteless, and so is a joke with no good judgement. Tasteful and tasteless sit face to face — the same game of 'ful' against 'less'.
