A pot with holes cannot hold water. In the same way, an argument with holes in it does not stand. If an idea holds water, it is sound and reasonable, like hold good.
अक्सर negative में आता है: His excuse does not hold water (यकीन लायक़ नहीं)। 'Tenable', 'cogent' related और 'untenable', 'full of holes' उल्टे हैं।
