Conviction shares its root with convince and convict, both about winning. When an argument wins inside you, you have a firm belief; when the prosecution wins in court, there is a conviction — a finding of guilt.
Both senses are tested: certainty and belief are synonyms of the first, and acquittal is the antonym of the legal sense; doubt and suspicion oppose the belief sense.
