Convict carries 'vict', the same idea of winning found in victory. When the prosecution wins the case, the accused is convicted, that is, found guilty. The opposite is acquit, to declare not guilty.
SSC tests convict against acquit and exonerate (antonyms) and indict (to charge formally, not to find guilty). As a noun, CON-vict is a prisoner; as a verb, con-VICT is to find guilty.
