Square one यानी board game का पहला खाना। सारी चालों के बाद गोटी वापस पहले खाने पर आ जाए तो फिर से शुरू करना पड़ता है। इसलिए back to square one का अर्थ है failure के बाद फिर शुरुआत पर लौट आना।
Square one is the very first square of a board game. If, after all your moves, your counter is sent back to the first square, you must start all over again. So 'back to square one' means returning to the starting point, usually after a failure.
इसका अर्थ है कोशिश fail होने पर फिर original point पर पहुँच जाना। 'Start afresh' जैसा option सही है; 'make headway' (आगे बढ़ना) इसका opposite है।
It means being back at the original starting point because an attempt has failed. Options like 'start afresh' match it; 'make headway' (make progress) is the opposite.
