एक पासे (die) पर 1 से 6 तक ही अंक होते हैं, seven होता ही नहीं। जो 'six… नहीं, seven' करता रहे, वह ख़ुद उलझा हुआ है — at sixes and sevens = अस्त-व्यस्त, उलझन में।
A single die shows only 1 to 6; there is no seven on it at all. Someone who keeps saying 'six... no, seven' has lost track of things. So 'at sixes and sevens' means confused and in disorder.
