SSC CGL 2023 · tier 1 shift 1 · question 31
Select the most appropriate option to fill in the blank. He is senior ______ me by three years in the department.
- athan
- bto
- cfrom
- dover
Answer: (b) to
Why this is the answer
'Senior' is a comparative adjective borrowed from Latin. Such words are always followed by 'to' and never by 'than'.
'Senior' एक comparative adjective है जो Latin से लिया गया है। ऐसे शब्दों के बाद सदैव 'to' आता है, 'than' कभी नहीं।
Why the other options are wrong
- (a) than — 'Than' is used with ordinary comparatives such as taller or better, not with Latin comparatives.
'Than' का प्रयोग taller या better जैसे सामान्य comparatives के साथ होता है, Latin comparatives के साथ नहीं।
- (c) from — 'From' shows a starting point or source, which is not the relation being expressed here.
'From' आरंभ-बिंदु या स्रोत दर्शाता है, जो यहाँ व्यक्त किया जा रहा संबंध नहीं है।
- (d) over — 'Over' shows position or authority, not a comparison of seniority in years.
'Over' स्थिति या अधिकार दर्शाता है, वर्षों की वरिष्ठता की तुलना नहीं।
The rule behind this question
A small group of comparative adjectives comes into English directly from Latin: senior, junior, superior, inferior, prior, anterior, posterior. These words already carry comparison inside them, so they are never followed by 'than'. They take the preposition 'to' instead. 'He is senior to me' is correct; 'He is senior than me' is wrong.
कुछ comparative adjectives अंग्रेज़ी में सीधे Latin से आए हैं: senior, junior, superior, inferior, prior, anterior, posterior। इन शब्दों में तुलना का भाव पहले से ही निहित होता है, इसलिए इनके बाद कभी 'than' नहीं लगता। इनके साथ preposition 'to' का प्रयोग होता है। इसलिए 'He is senior to me' सही है और 'He is senior than me' गलत है।
