Between two figures every position hands its symbol to a fixed new position: top-left to centre, centre to top-right, top-right to bottom-right, bottom-right to bottom-left, bottom-left to top-left.
Check with figures 1 and 2: @ goes from top-left to the centre, and || goes from top-right to bottom-right.
