Which phenomenon explains the apparent retrograde motion of planets as seen from Earth?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (D) Relative planetary motion

Apparent retrograde motion is due to relative planetary motion: when the faster Earth overtakes an outer planet such as Mars, the planet seems to move backwards against the stars for some time. Precession, gravitational lensing and orbital resonance do not cause this apparent backward motion.
