Which colours were commonly used in prehistoric rock paintings found in India?
ExplanationAnswer and explanation
Answer: (B) Black, white, and red ochre
Why
Prehistoric artists did not have shop-bought paint. They ground natural minerals: red ochre (iron oxide) for red, lime or chalk for white, charcoal or manganese for black, and sometimes green and yellow earths. Metals like silver and gold were not used as colour, and synthetic dyes such as indigo and vermilion came much later.
Why not the others
•
(A) Blue, yellow and green are not the typical set; blue pigment was not used.
•
(C) Silver, gold and bronze are metals, not paints.
•
(D) Indigo and vermilion are later dyes and pigments; saffron is a plant spice-dye.
Around this question
•
Red is the most common colour at Bhimbetka, and the paintings were made with fingers, twigs or brushes of plant fibre.
•
Early (Upper Palaeolithic) paintings are large figures in green and dark red; Mesolithic ones are smaller, lively hunting and dance scenes.
•
Rock art is 'prehistoric' art, yet it was drawn by hunter-gatherers who had no writing.
•
Painting was probably tied to magic and ritual of the hunt, not only decoration.
