The BBNJ Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) relates to biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction. Its four main issues are: marine genetic resources and benefit sharing; area-based management tools, such as marine protected areas; environmental impact assessments; and capacity building and transfer of marine technology. The regulation of maritime trade routes is not its subject.
This agreement was adopted in June 2023.
It came into force on 17 January 2026.
