Which element was predicted by Dmitri Mendeleev as Eka-Silicon?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (A) Germanium

Why
Mendeleev left a blank below silicon in group IV and called it Eka-silicon ('one place below silicon'). He predicted its atomic mass, density and the formula of its oxide. In 1886 Winkler discovered germanium and the properties matched closely.
Why not the others
•
(B) Gallium was Eka-aluminium, not Eka-silicon.
•
(C) Aluminium was already known; it was the reference element for Eka-aluminium.
•
(D) Silicon itself was known; Eka-silicon means the one below silicon.
Around this question
•
Eka-boron = scandium (Nilson, 1879); Eka-aluminium = gallium (Lecoq de Boisbaudran, 1875).
•
Germanium is a metalloid and an important semiconductor material.
•
'Eka' is Sanskrit for 'one'.
•
Gallium melts at about 30 °C; it can melt in your palm.
•
Mendeleev's gaps were the proof of his method.
