Why is stainless steel preferred for kitchen use over iron?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (C) It resists corrosion

Why
Stainless steel is iron alloyed with chromium and nickel. The chromium forms an invisible, tough layer of chromium oxide on the surface that seals the metal from air and water, so it neither rusts nor stains. Plain iron rusts quickly in a wet kitchen.
Why not the others
•
(A) Stainless steel is not lighter than iron; its density is about the same.
•
(B) Heat retention has nothing to do with the reason; steel is actually not an especially good heat retainer.
•
(D) It contains no calcium; its main additives are chromium and nickel.
Around this question
•
Typical stainless steel is iron with a good share of chromium (at least about a tenth), plus nickel.
•
Chromium plating is also used on taps, bicycle handlebars and car parts.
•
Stainless steel is used in cutlery, surgical instruments, sinks and railway coaches.
•
Aluminium resists corrosion due to a self-formed oxide film, not an alloy.
•
The Iron Pillar of Delhi (Gupta period) has stayed largely rust-free for over 1,500 years, helped by its phosphorus-rich iron.
