Which pair of metals begins to melt at room temperature?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (A) Gallium and Caesium

Why
Most metals have high melting points because the metallic bond is strong. Gallium melts at about 30 degrees Celsius and caesium at about 28 degrees Celsius, so they start melting at a warm room temperature, and gallium famously melts in the palm of your hand. Mercury is liquid already at normal room temperature.
Why not the others
•
(B) Copper melts at over 1000 degrees Celsius, and cobalt is higher still.
•
(C) Zinc melts at over 400 degrees Celsius and copper at over 1000.
•
(D) Iron and nickel are strong, high-melting metals (over 1400 degrees Celsius).
Around this question
•
Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at ordinary room temperature, with a melting point of about minus 39 degrees Celsius.
•
Caesium and francium are the most reactive alkali metals; gallium is used in LEDs and semiconductors.
•
Tungsten has the highest melting point of all metals.
•
Gallium expands on solidifying, like water.
•
Alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) have low melting points compared with other metals.
