Which of the following options shows the metals that do not react with cold water?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (D) Aluminium, iron and zinc

Why
Only the very reactive metals at the top (K, Na, Ca) react with cold water. Aluminium is protected by its oxide film; iron and zinc are simply not reactive enough. These three react only with steam.
Why not the others
•
(A) Sodium and calcium both react with cold water.
•
(B) Sodium and potassium react violently with cold water.
•
(C) Sodium, calcium and potassium all react with cold water.
Around this question
•
Na and K react so violently that the hydrogen released can catch fire.
•
Calcium reacts less violently, and the bubbles of hydrogen make the calcium pieces float.
•
Magnesium reacts with hot water, not cold.
•
Iron with steam gives Fe₃O₄ (magnetic oxide) and hydrogen.
•
Metals below hydrogen (Cu, Ag, Au) do not react with water or steam.
