The first capital of Magadha was Rajagriha (Girivraja, modern Rajgir), a fort-city ringed by hills. It served Bimbisara and Ajatashatru. Later Udayin, the son of Ajatashatru, shifted the capital to Pataliputra, a better place for trade and defence at the meeting of rivers.

(B) Ujjain was the capital of Avanti in Malwa, not of Magadha.

(C) Vaishali was the capital of the Vajji confederacy, though Shishunaga later used it as a second capital.

(D) Taxila was the capital of Gandhara in the far north-west.

Rajagriha is also sacred to Buddhists and Jains; the First Buddhist Council met here in the Saptaparni cave.

Pataliputra is modern Patna; the old name Kusumapura means 'city of flowers'.

Pataliputra remained the capital through the Nandas, Mauryas and Guptas.

Rajagriha's old city is called Girivraja, 'hill-ringed'; it had a stone rampart around it.
