What happens to a compass needle when electric current flows through a nearby wire?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (A) It deflects from its original direction.

When current flows through a wire, a magnetic field is produced around it. A compass needle placed nearby is deflected from its original direction because of this magnetic field.
This effect was discovered by Hans Christian Oersted in 1820.
When the direction of the current is reversed, the deflection of the needle is also reversed.
The direction of the magnetic field is found by the right-hand thumb rule.
