Which process causes heavy rainfall on the windward side of a mountain range in India?
ExplanationAnswer and explanation
Answer: (A) Orographic uplift
Heavy rainfall on the windward slope of a mountain range is caused by orographic uplift. Moist winds strike the mountain and rise, get cooled, and condense to cause rain.
The western slope of the Western Ghats, being windward, receives heavy rain from the south-west monsoon.
The leeward slope has a rain shadow region, where rainfall is low.
Cherrapunji and Mawsynram in Meghalaya are famous for heavy rainfall.
