इलाहाबाद स्तंभ (pillar) अभिलेख (प्रयाग प्रशस्ति) में समुद्रगुप्त को पृथ्वी (Earth) पर विचरण करने वाला देवता बताया गया है और उसकी तुलना कुबेर तथा इंद्र जैसे देवताओं से की गई है। इस प्रशस्ति की रचना उसके दरबारी कवि हरिषेण ने की थी।
इसमें समुद्रगुप्त की दिग्विजय का वर्णन है।
उसे 'कविराज' कहा गया तथा उसने अश्वमेध यज्ञ किया।
इतिहासकार वी. ए. स्मिथ ने उसे 'भारत का नेपोलियन' कहा।
