In which does division of labour take place?

ExplanationAnswer and explanation

Answer: (D) Both unicellular and multicellular organisms

Why
Division of labour means different jobs are done by different parts. In a unicellular organism the jobs (digestion, movement, excretion) are shared among the organelles of the single cell; in a multicellular organism they are shared among specialised cells, tissues and organs. So the idea applies to both, only the level differs.
Why not the others
•
(A) It is not true that only unicellular organisms show it; multicellular ones do too.
•
(B) It is not true that only multicellular organisms show it; Amoeba already has a food vacuole, contractile vacuole and pseudopodia, each with a job.
•
(C) Division of labour is shown by every living organism, so 'neither' is wrong.
Around this question
•
Cell is the structural and functional unit of life.
•
A cell organelle is to a cell what an organ is to the body.
•
Multicellular specialisation: muscle cells contract, nerve cells conduct, blood cells carry gases.
•
Higher organisation brings more efficiency but more dependence between parts.
