Tracheid is a key component of the xylem plant tissue. Xylem is a vascular tissue responsible for the transport of water and minerals from roots to other parts of the plant. Tracheids are elongated, narrow cells with thick, lignified cell walls that provide mechanical support. They are found in both angiosperms and gymnosperms, unlike vessels which are mainly in angiosperms. Other xylem elements include fibers and parenchyma cells. Tracheids have closed ends and water moves through pits in their walls. In contrast, phloem transports food, cuticle provides protection against water loss, and bark serves as a protective outer layer. Thus, tracheids are a defining feature of xylem tissue.
