Which principle allows us to separate isotopes using diffusion?
ExplanationAnswer and explanation
Answer: (B) Graham’s Law
Why
Graham's law of diffusion says that the rate of diffusion of a gas is inversely proportional to the square root of its molar mass. Gases made of the lighter isotope therefore diffuse slightly faster, and repeated diffusion through porous barriers separates them. This is how uranium-235 is enriched, using uranium hexafluoride gas.
Why not the others
•
(A) Gresham's law is from economics: bad money drives out good.
•
(C) Faraday's laws concern electrolysis and electromagnetic induction.
•
(D) Lenz's law gives the direction of the induced current.
Around this question
•
Rate of diffusion ∝ 1/√(molar mass): hydrogen diffuses fastest of all gases.
•
Thomas Graham (Scottish chemist) gave the law in 1829-1833.
•
Other methods of isotope separation: gas centrifuge, mass spectrometer, laser separation.
•
Uranium for enrichment is turned into UF₆ because UF₆ is a gas at fairly low temperature.
•
Heavy water is separated from ordinary water by exploiting differences in physical properties of H₂O and D₂O.
