A major feature of the Green Revolution was the use of high yielding varieties (HYV) of seeds, along with modern agricultural inputs such as chemical fertilisers, irrigation and pesticides. As a result, the production of wheat and rice increased considerably.
Through this programme, India moved from dependence on the import of foodgrains towards self-reliance.
It began in the middle of the 1960s.
M. S. Swaminathan is regarded as the father of the Green Revolution in India.
Its greatest benefit went to Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh.
