Which one of the following correctly explains why concentrated sulphuric acid is stored in airtight containers made of special materials?
ExplanationAnswer and explanation
Answer: (B) Because it readily absorbs moisture from air and is highly corrosive to many materials
Why
Concentrated sulphuric acid is hygroscopic: it greedily takes water vapour from the air. If left open it absorbs water, gets diluted and loses strength, and it can also release heat. So it is kept in airtight containers.
Why not the others
•
(A) It is highly corrosive, not non-corrosive.
•
(C) It is stable and does not decompose at room temperature.
•
(D) It freezes at about 10 °C for the pure acid, not at room temperature (and freezing is not the reason).
Around this question
•
Conc. H₂SO₄ dries gases (but not ammonia), and turns sugar black by dehydration.
•
Sulphuric acid is a viscous, oily, colourless liquid, hence 'oil of vitriol'.
•
Always add acid to water slowly, never water to acid.
•
The acid in car (lead-acid) batteries is dilute sulphuric acid.
•
Concentrated H₂SO₄ is about 98 per cent by mass.
